Trellis making workshop at Carnforth Street (slideshow)
We managed to source locally harvested bamboo and hazel, and to carry it using very low carbon transport – rather heavily laden transport, as you can see!
We brought a range of different sized hazel and bamboo, aiming to make different sized trellises to order. It was a learning experience for us as well as residents, as we worked out the best way to make a strong structure, and use the different properties of the materials.
We were set the challenge of making a trellis for a local resident who keeps chickens (in Moss Side!), and hoped we could create one to help stop them escaping – I have heard since that they have managed to escape again anyway, but hopefully it will at least allow growing runner beans!
